Did you know that our calendar, which we use today, goes back to the Roman calendar, which was introduced around the 8th century BC? This means that our “original calendar” is over 2000 years old and has undergone several reforms and adjustments over time. One of the ancient calendrical traditions that has been preserved to this day is the significance of the 7 days of the week, as they were named after the 7 ancient main planets.

The MOON stands for MONDAY
The MARS stands for TUESDAY
The MERCURY stands for WEDNESDAY
The JUPITER stands for THURSDAY
THE VENUS stands for FRIDAY
The SATURN stands for SATURDAY
Und die SUN für den SUNDAY

With Monday and Sunday, it's still wonderfully easy to hear, and for most of the other days, evidence can be found in Norse as well as Germanic mythology that even at that time, the days of the week were dedicated to the various planetary gods, because:

The god “Tyr” was dedicated to Tuesday (Old Norse “Týrsdagr,” which became “Tuesday” in English).
The god “Odin” was dedicated to Wednesday (Old Norse “Óðinsdagr,” which became “Wednesday” in English).
The god “Donnar” was dedicated to Thursday .
The goddess “Freya” was dedicated to Friday .

At the same time, the Germanic gods were associated with the ancient planets.

The god “Tyr” was assigned to the planet “Mars” .
The god “Odin” was assigned to the planet Mercury .
The god “Donnar” wurden dem Planeten “Jupiter” .
The goddess “Freya” was assigned to the planet “Venus” .

These associations were often made in the past to establish a connection between different mythologies and cosmic forces. In the Italian language, this is still clear for almost all weekdays today, as they are called:

The moon LUNA stands for LUNEDÌ (Monday).
The Mars MARTE stands for MARTEDÌ (Tuesday).
The Mercury MERCURIO stands for MERCOLEDÌ (Wednesday).
The Jupiter GIOVE stands for GIOVEDÌ (Thursday).
The Venus VENERE stands for VENERDÌ (Friday).
The Saturn SATURNO stands for SABATO (Saturday).
The sun SOLE stands for DOMENICA (Sunday).

By the way, it was already known in antiquity and the Middle Ages that the Moon is actually a natural satellite of the Earth and not a planet, yet it was still included in the list of planets as a “wandering star” because of its astronomical and astrological significance.

Ancient astronomers and astrologers regarded the Moon and the other six main celestial bodies (Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the Sun) as the most important heavenly bodies because they influence human life and nature. In astrology, they were associated with various characteristics and qualities, whereas astronomy dealt with the precise calculations of the planets’ positions. The astrologers and astronomers of that time did not separate the two sciences; rather, ancient civilizations viewed the celestial phenomena as a whole, seeing both scientific and spiritual aspects in them.

Only in modern times, starting from the 16th century, did the paths of astronomers and astrologers begin to diverge, developing into independent disciplines. Despite this separation, significant achievements from ancient times continue to influence our daily lives today. One example is the calendar we currently use, which was developed through the collaboration of astronomers and astrologers.
